A “Teachers Deserve a Break Discount Program” has been created at Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ for all Michigan K-12 educators and administrators who join its Master’s in Teacher Education Program. The incentive supports teachers in furthering their education while improving affordability.

“We recognize teachers need to continue their education and sometimes getting an advanced degree can be out of reach financially for a lot of teachers. We wanted to provide an opportunity that was affordable,” said Dr. Dawn Milner, Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Director of the Institute for Education. “The more we can help prepare the teachers, the better they can be in the classroom, which means our students are better ahead because of it.”

The new discount program offers teachers and administrators from Michigan K-12 the opportunity to pay only 50 percent of the Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ tuition rate and up to 18 graduate credits with the discount, with no additional fees. The Master’s in Teacher Education program is a 30 credit program.

“If we want teachers to be able to stay in the field, be current and have the best practices at their fingertips, we have to make it easy and affordable,” said Milner.

Teachers will come to Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ to take a course or two to renew their license- or work towards the full degree. A subset of these teachers will start courses and potentially continue their education.

“Our goal is to help teachers understand how this investment of time and energy right now, during a time where they’re getting pulled in so many different directions, is really worth it. If we can lower the barrier of cost, that is a way we can incentivize teachers to come to us,” said Dr. Christine Knaggs, Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Director of Graduate Studies.

The Master’s in Teacher Education program is fully online and is mostly asynchronous, holding courses during summer, fall and spring. Due to the convenience, students have enrolled in Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ from around the U.S. and other countries including Chile.

“Anytime you can continue to hone your craft, learn more skills, and deepen your knowledge and understanding is only going to make you a better educator in the classroom,” said Milner. “It takes the knowledge that a classroom teacher already has and adds to that depth of experience.”

In the wake of COVID-19, teachers have had to become extremely adaptable on how they reach and educate students. This includes rethinking standard practices, incorporating new technology and teaching lessons that are comprised of emotional learning.

Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ is in the process of adding additional programs including the Reading Specialist Endorsement. The Department of Teacher Education is focusing on current topics teachers need, incorporating courses in social and emotional learning and a physical education course to include a health component.

“Depending on where teachers teach, they may not be getting [financial] support to pursue higher education. This allows us to do our part in helping to support teachers to make it affordable so they can pursue a Master’s degree,” said Knaggs. “The more highly educated they are, the better our profession becomes.”
